Summary

Every email client has it's quirks and Outlook by Microsoft knows how to set the bar. This page will help diagnose and correct Outlook specific errors that can get in the way of normal work.

Cannot Load Profile // Need to be Online to use Exchange

Outlook 2010 and 2013 will try and load a Microsoft Exchange account and profile whenever it open if there is one set up; this causes an issue however if the user has a half-made profile in Outlook. In fact this will often result in Outlook being unable to launch entirely until an account is configured.

You can circumvent Outlook (on Windows) and setup//edit up a new POP/IMAP account by going to Control Panel > Mail. This will given you the standard Outlook accounts page and you know where to go from there.

Importing contacts Loads a Blank Address Book

Importing contacts to Outlook is a very streamlined process now; simply go to File > Import and use your common sense for file types. The one major issue that will get in the is that Outlook names the headers in it's Address Book differently than most programs. At the last step you will have the option to do Custom Mapping. Select that and ensure you map the email value on the left to the Email Address value under Primary Email.

Outlook 2013's infinite "Upgrade in Progress"

There is an issue where Outlook 2013 will get stuck upgrading its self. It will not allow you to send or receive and will not give any description of what it is doing or allow you to stop it from upgrading.

To resolve the issue go to Control Panel > Program and Features > Microsoft Office > Change > Online Repair

Errors running online repair in Outlook 2013

Getting "something Went Wrong" when trying to repair Outlook. Errors can occur if your malware software or firewall is interfering with Outlook.

To resolve try turning off your firewall or malware software.

Outlook 2013 Imap Sync issues

There is a known Imap Sync issue with 2013 where it will not sync the contents of the inbox. There are 2 possible solutions to the issue.

1. Enter in Inbox as the root folder path for your IMAP.

• File-> Account Settings-> Account Settings…
• Double click on your IMAP account.
• Button: More Options…
• Tab: Advanced
• Option: Root folder path
• Usually setting this to “Inbox” will do the trick.

2. Unsubscribe and resubscribe to the Inbox folder.

• In Mail, in the Navigation Pane, right-click the top folder for your IMAP account.
• Click IMAP Folders.
• Click Query.
• Click Inbox, and then click unsubscribe and apply then click subscribe and apply.

IMAP Sync Error and NetWork Prompts

IMAP connections to large accounts over long periods of time will usually degrade in Outlook (for lack of a better term). It will constantly ask for the network password and/or give the error below:

Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for mail.sanddollartravelandcruises.com.' reported error (0x80040813) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for mail.sanddollartravelandcruises.com. Error: Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for mail.sanddollartravelandcruises.com. Error: . If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

The best way to correct this is to recreate the account in Outlook (without deleting the first instance of the account). Test to ensure it is getting all new messages and synchronizing correctly. If everything is good then delete the first IMAP account.

Cannot Add Data File // Date File Corruption

If you ever encounter an issue with a personal folders file (.pst) there is a hidden utility you can use for Outlook. Go to C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/Scanpost.exe (exact file path may vary). Scanpost.exe can repair almost any corrupt .pst file. Simply run it, browse for the data file, and click Start. It will run and then give you the option to repair. Once repaired try importing your .pst file again.

Unlikely to run into it, but we have a few times now.

A good note is they could have too many emails in one folder.

Error Number: 0x800C0133 = a corrupt Inbox.

Move any mail you wish to save to a local folder you create. Then delete the problem Inbox as follows.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the Inbox.dbx and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently.
